I had the opportunity to test this emergency fire starter out recently and it works great! These fire starters are a cotton like tissue covered in a waterproof wax (they are formed in to a thin disc shape, about the size of a small drink coaster) and they come in a pretty handy metal tin, you can fit in a small pocket.
You can dig up the roots of a white spruce tree to make
great cordage in a survival situation. The roots are extremely durable and
flexible. You can use these roots to help build shelter or tools. White spruce
is found throughout the boreal forests of North America.
This is the range map of white spruce (Picea glauca) provided by USGS.
